Receiving diamond

U10–U11 Passing and receiving

An unopposed passing pattern round a 15 m diamond where each receiver opens up and receives across the body before passing on.

Receiving diamond with open body 1 2 3 4 5 15 m Follow your pass Team A Pass Run
Receiving diamond: four cones 15 m apart in a diamond. The player at the bottom passes to the side cone; the receiver opens the body, receives across the body with the back foot and passes on to the top. Each player follows their pass.

Rules

  • One player per cone, the extra player behind the start
  • Bottom to side cone; receiver opens hips inside, takes it on the back foot and plays to the top
  • Follow your pass to the next cone
  • Change direction each block so both feet work; 30 s rest

To make it easier

  • Shrink the diamond to 10 m
  • Allow two touches before the pass

To make it harder

  • Passive defender behind the receiver calls 'man on' or 'turn' to force a decision

Coaching points

  • Body open before the ball arrives
  • Back-foot receive to move the ball on in one touch
  • Firm pass along the ground to the receiver's back foot
  • Look over the shoulder and ask what they saw

Common mistakes

  • Receiving on the front foot with a closed body, needing an extra touch to turn
