Three-zone build-up game: three defenders (A) build against one forward in the back zone, then must find a midfielder who has moved free between the opponent's lines in the middle zone. A point is scored when the ball reaches the target player in the front zone.

Rules

  • Back zone: goalkeeper and three defenders v one forward; middle zone: three v two; front zone: target v defender
  • Players stay in their zones
  • A point when the target player receives under control
  • Defending side scores in mini-goals on the back line after a regain
  • 90 s rest; rotate zones and roles after each block

To make it easier

  • The forward in the back zone may only shadow, not tackle

To make it harder

  • One defending midfielder may drop in to press, making it 3v2
  • Let one defender carry the ball into the middle zone for a 4v2

Coaching points

  • Defenders spread so the forward cannot press two of them
  • Midfielders find gaps between opponents and scan first
  • Receive half-turned and play forward; recycle and switch if closed

Common mistakes

  • Midfielders hiding level with or behind opponents
  • Defenders passing sideways too quickly
