5v5 possession with acceleration lanes

Open age–Veterans Possession and rondosInjury prevention and physicalSmall-sided games

5v5 possession with side lanes entered only at a sprint, scoring by receiving out of the lane; works on runs in behind and timing the pass.

Set-up

Two teams of 5 in free possession. On each touchline there is an 8 m lane marked with cones of another colour. To score, a player from the team in possession enters the lane at the nearer end on the run, sprints through it and receives the pass as they come out, without stopping. Defenders cannot go into the lane, but can wait at the exit. Short sets with long rests to keep the sprint quality high.

Rules

  • Only the team in possession can go into the lanes, and only one player at a time.
  • The ball must be received at the lane exit (up to 2 m beyond it) and on the run; if the player slows down before receiving, there is no point.
  • Defenders cannot go into the lane, but can press the player coming out of it.
  • After a point, that lane is closed until the ball has been through the other half of the area.
  • 3 touches max. outside the lanes.

Animation steps

  1. The 7 sprints into the lane; the 8 passes to the lane exit.
  2. The 7 receives on the run at the exit: 1 point. They link straight away with the 10.
  3. The 11 sets off into the lane on the other side and the 10 reads the run.
  4. The 11 receives at a sprint: second lane within 30 s, 3 points.
